Our Approach

I’m a beekeeper – and like many beekeepers,

I am acutely aware of the environment in which my bees live and the effects that people and societies have on that environment. I have travelled widely speaking with scientists, technologists and rural communities about the enormous challenges we face from environmental degradation and the seemingly divergent goals of taking better care of the environment yet feeding an increasingly hungry planet. Here in Australia, we can learn a great deal from overseas experiences and many opportunities still exist today where we can avoid the worst of what has occurred by employing sustainable land management practices, modern materials and technology.

Working with the farmers who kindly host my apiaries, I share my experiences and see if we can improve their operations using data and measurements to gain new insights and help them “get time back in their day”. They can see how I use technology in my beekeeping and try out their own ideas on a low risk basis.

We work through The following four steps :

01

Understand

I will sit down with you and explain the basics of the technology I’m using, how I collect the data to help my business and how this might be useful to you. This could include deploying sensors to collect weather data, soil temperature/moisture or even monitoring the movement of livestock and checking the integrity of fence-lines. I have even used drone-based imagery surveys and mapping for my business that could benefit you. I have done all of this with those who host my apiaries and I can help you as well.

02

Demonstrate

When we understand what is helpful to you, I do a few demonstrations and build your knowledge about whats involved. For example, we can do some drone mapping or crop scouting. I can show you the network, the sensors and how I visualise and use the data. We can then prototype something for you either using what I have already or you can invest a little to make the demonstration more relevant to you.

03

Build

Using the base infrastructure that I have you can build it out further by adding your own sensors. Or – you can be more independent and establish some infrastructure of your own. Importantly, these networks have a long range, so it is possible for your neighbors to use it also. Access to the network is free.

04

Support

When you use the same technology and techniques that I use, then my support to you is generally free. I say “generally” because great ideas emerge with unique circumstances that I cant’ cover under my existing operation. Sometimes what we come up with is beyond my resources so we might have to have a discussion about that. Whatever the case, my goal is to help you understand and use technology so that we all benefit.
